THERE + BE

THERE + BE = There is  There are.

We use There + be, to talk about existence. The existence of a person, an animal, an insect, object, etc. it may be singular and plural.

In singular I use THERE IS

In plural I use THERE ARE

In singular, I use the indefinite articles "a/an" with countable singular nouns.

If the noun is uncountable, I use the indefinite pronouns "some/any". I use "some" in affirmative sentences and "any" in negative and interrogative sentences.

In plural countable nouns, I use the indefinite pronouns "some/any" or I can also use the cardinal numbers from 2 and on.

EXAMPLES:

Singular countable nouns:

1) There is an old pencil under the desk. With countable singular nouns, I use the articles. In this example I use the article "an" because the next word begins with a vowel letter.

2) There is a red pencil in the box. In this example, I use the article "a" because the next word begins with a consonant letter.

Singular uncountable noun:

There is not any sand on the floor. In this example, I use a singular uncountable noun "sand". As the noun is uncountable so I can only use "some/any".

Plural countable nouns:

There are twenty new chairs in my classroom. In this example, I use a number in plural, but I can also use "some/any" Example👉 There are some new chairs in y classroom.
